SnowDex

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 30, 2026

This policy covers the snowdex.app website. In one line: there are no accounts and no cookies, we show no ads, we never sell your information, and a ZIP code or location you look up is used to answer that lookup and is not stored by us.

1. Who we are

The data controller is:

2. What happens when you look up snow

A ZIP code you type is sent to our website server, which turns it into the ~4 km grid cell it falls in and then asks our snow data server for that cell. Only the cell (its centre point), not the ZIP, goes to the snow data server. We do not store the ZIP.

“Use my location”asks your browser for permission first. If you agree, your browser rounds the position to the centre of its ~4 km grid cell before anything is sent, so a precise position never leaves your device. It is used the same way and not stored. No other page asks for your location, and the site’s permissions policy blocks embedded content from asking.

Our snow data server removes lookup coordinates from its own logs. Like any website, our hosting providers (Vercel for the website, Railway for the data server) may keep short-lived request logs that include the requested address, which for a lookup contains the ZIP code or the rounded cell centre, and your IP address.

3. Analytics

We use PostHog to count page views and a few actions (a lookup was made and whether it succeeded, a button was clicked) so we know what is used. It runs without cookies or local storage, creates no profile of you, and is set up not to keep IP addresses. ZIP codes, positions, anything after a “#” or “?” in an address, and campaign tags are removed before an event is sent.

4. Who processes data for us

ProcessorPurposeData involved
VercelHosts snowdex.app and its lookupShort-lived request logs: IP address, requested address (a lookup's ZIP or rounded cell)
RailwayHosts our snow data serverThe rounded cell centre of a lookup, used to answer it; short-lived request logs
PostHogCookieless page-view and click countsPage addresses without query or fragment, the actions listed above; no IP address kept
NOAA / National Weather ServiceSnowfall estimates and forecastsOur server downloads public snowfall data, and asks NWS for the forecast at a rounded cell centre — never anything about you

We do not sell, rent or trade personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

5. Legal basis (GDPR / UK GDPR)

Answering a lookup you ask for (performance of your request), and our legitimate interest in running, securing and improving the site with minimal, cookieless statistics. You can object at any time by email.

6. Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. Because there are no accounts and lookups are not stored, there is usually nothing tied to you. California residents: we do not sell or share personal information. EU/EEA and UK residents may also complain to their data protection authority or to Portugal’s Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados (CNPD). Requests: support@snowdex.app.

7. International transfers

Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where personal data leaves the EEA/UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

8. Children

The site is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (US) or 16 (EU/EEA).

9. Changes

We will update the date above when this policy changes. When the SnowDex app launches, this policy will gain sections for it before the app is available.

10. Contact
